Course Maintenance update February ‘09

Poppy Hills held its own during the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro Am. However, receiving 11” of rain in a short amount of time requires some maintenance to alleviate standing water. Approximately half of the greens have been partially aerated.
  • Opening these areas up with small hollow tines allows for drainage.
  • We will not top dress so we may continue mowing at tournament height .115 of an inch.
  • This will allow the water to dissipate from the surface without impacting play.
  • Less than a quarter of each green will be affected and in some cases it will actually be in the collar.
  • This will help us make them dryer and healthier.

Renovation of the 2nd green complete (pictured right)

In mid-September, Poppy Hills began a complete renovation of the second hole. The primary goal was to make the hole more playable for all skill levels. The original double-green was not working operationally, and caused slow play too early in the round.

Robert Trent Jones Jr., the original course designer, was brought in to redesign the hole. Two of his designers, Bruce Charlton and Mike Gorman, came up with a solid plan for the new second. The current green surface was stripped off, and placed on plastic to preserve the turf. The entire green complex was re-graded. New drainage, irrigation and sub-surface were installed. Finally, bunkers were reshaped to create a more formidable challenge for the player.

If you have any questions on the renovation process, please contact Poppy Hills Head Professional Justin Williams, at Justin@ncga.org.
